Advent Watch Face: Candles

Four fluted ivory pillar candles, one for each Sunday of Advent, stand around the time on a deep green-black marble dial. In November they are still unlit. On the first Sunday of Advent the first flame appears, and each Sunday after that another candle joins it, until all four burn in the last days before Christmas.

Around the edge, 25 bronze bars work as an advent countdown: from December 1 one more bar glows each day, and on Christmas Day the ring is complete.

The Sundays are worked out from the calendar, so the candles fall on the right days every year.

On the dial
• Digital time in cream serif numerals, 12 or 24 hour as set on your watch
• Weekday, month and date in gold under the time
• Days left until Christmas between the upper candles
• Battery level between the lower candles

When the watch rests in always-on mode, the marble fades to a shadow, the lit candles keep a soft flame and the time stays readable.
