About this audiobook

SHORTLISTED FOR THE JAMES TAIT BLACK PRIZE | THE JHALAK PRIZE | THE BREAD AND ROSES AWARD & LONGLISTED FOR THE ORWELL PRIZE FOR POLITICAL WRITING

'This is the book I've been waiting for - for years. It's personal, historical, political, and it speaks to where we are now' Benjamin Zephaniah
'I recommend Natives to everyone' Candice Carty-Williams

From the first time he was stopped and searched as a child, to the day he realised his mum was white, to his first encounters with racist teachers - race and class have shaped Akala's life and outlook. In this unique book he takes his own experiences and widens them out to look at the social, historical and political factors that have left us where we are today.

Covering everything from the police, education and identity to politics, sexual objectification and the far right, Nativesspeaks directly to British denial and squeamishness when it comes to confronting issues of race and class that are at the heart of the legacy of Britain's racialised empire.

Natives is the searing modern polemic and Sunday Times bestseller from the BAFTA and MOBO award-winning musician and political commentator, Akala.

'The kind of disruptive, aggressive intellect that a new generation is closely watching' Afua Hirsch, Observer

'Lucid, wide-ranging' John Kerrigan, TLS

the guy is just brilliant and relatable, the audio version is clear and concise and any problems i have with this book is not from the author but more "Google play books" app. I'd say chapter 10 is my personal favourite with some great insights relating to America and Briton with our difference's and stark similarities. truly a must read or listen to book in my opinion

Just started, but I don't like narrator's accent. I paid for this book, at least deserve a professional narrative.

A fascinating book on an extremely sad and traumatic subject that has been thoroughly researched by the author. In fact, Akala has provided so much information about racism around the world over the last few centuries, that I could easy listen to it again and hear information that I didn't remember from the first listening - and I fully intend to do this. When it comes to the British empire's legacy of racism in contemporary Britain, he certainly has produced a masterpiece that lays bare the statistics about institutional racism in the UK. Furthermore, Akala's narration of the book greatly enhances its impact on the listener, as his passion for this sad subject is very evident. It is a must read for anyone interested in learning more about the history of racism in Britain and its continued impact on our world.
