About this audiobook

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Tanya Reynolds, star of Sex Education. This definitive recording includes an introduction by Fiona Stafford.

With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen's most flawless work. Beautiful, clever, rich-and single-Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protégée Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

The last book published during Austen's lifetime is very well read here. It's a slow story. Emma is a bit full of herself and makes lots of bad calls, but she means well. Her friendship with Jane is mostly talked about rather than shown, so not very compelling. Emma's ever-worrying dad is the most comical character. A couple of characters harbor a secret that's interesting but not very shocking. The ending wraps things up for everyone very neatly, and listeners will be happy for their favorite characters.

beautifully performed and delightful as always. Jane Austen's sense of humor and witty observation is always a treat.

About the author

Jane Austen, the daughter of a clergyman, was born in Hampshire in 1775, and later lived in Bath and the village of Chawton. As a child and teenager, she wrote brilliantly witty stories for her family's amusement, as well as a novella, Lady Susan. Her first published novel was Sense and Sensibility, which appeared in 1811 and was soon followed by Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma. Austen died in 1817, and Persuasion and Northanger Abbey were published posthumously in 1818.
