After twenty-seven years as a repairman of magical Sources, Kaniev has suddenly lost the knack for his trade. But before he quits and goes home to take up fishing, he decides to take on one more repair job: Source Chaitrasse, managed by the lovely but formidable priestess Fransisa, is experiencing a serious imbalance. And this time, his depleted finances and self-confidence demand that he get the job done right.

Having served as a priestess at Source Chaitrasse for two decades, Fransisa believed she was next in line to become High Priestess – until a mere child, a girl of thirteen, took her place in the succession. She is struggling to hold on to her position at Chaitrasse when a wandering tradesman appears, claiming that the Source has a problem and he’s the one who can fix it. He looks more like a brigand than a powerful wizard or wise scholar, but with an important ceremony coming up and her life’s work in danger of coming to naught, Fransisa decides to err on the side of caution and let him take a look at the Source.

Kaniev’s disastrous attempt to repair Source Chaitrasse leads him and Fransisa to a sorcerer who is conducting dangerous experiments with the magical Sources. Caught in the sorcercer’s schemes, Fransisa and Kaniev must overcome their differences and rediscover the strength they thought had abandoned them to stop him before he destroys the Sources of magic and all the lands around them – and to claim the life and love they thought had passed them by.
