Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember.

Thoughtful and reserved, Joan is content with her life as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University and as aunt to her precocious niece, Frances.

That is, until she comes across an advertisement seeking the first women scientists to join NASA’s space shuttle program. Suddenly, Joan burns to be one of the few people to go to space.

Selected from a pool of thousands of applicants in the summer of 1980, Joan begins training to be an astronaut at Houston's Johnson Space Centre, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates.

As the new astronauts prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined and begins to question everything she believes about her place in the observable universe.

Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, it all changes in an instant.

Atmosphere is a soaring story about the transformative power of love - this time among the stars.

It was a good book with a good story but it lacked th intensity to sweep me off my feet or take my breath away. The romance between Joan and Vanessa did not feel all that compelling and lacked any real chemistry. It did not exude the same emotional intensity as Evelyn Hugo or The Safekeep and I felt Joan was more emotionally invested in Frances rather than Vanessa. Part of the reason is perhaps because I did not fully like how Joan was portrayed from the beginning and that affected how the story unfolded for me. Apart from Barbara and Frances, the rest of the casts did not have enough depth of character or development for me to feel anything significant for them. The interesting part of the book was what was happening in the present and especially the ending when things could have gone one way or the other, and I did shed a tear or two then. So there was some measure of redemption for the book after all. In conclusion, I would rate it somewhere between 3 and 4. I liked the story. It was good but wasn't exceptional.

it is so cool how much effort TJR puts into her books, like i can only imagine the research she has to do while writing these kind of masterpieces.
