About this ebook

Ray’s thumb rests under Lucas’s cheekbone while the spare-room door stays open the width of a hand and the list on the fridge waits for morning.

The spare-room door stands open the width of a hand. Ray’s palm cups Lucas’s jaw on the white sheets, thumb under the cheekbone, sweat glossing both of them under the ceiling light. Lucas’s breath stays shallow. His hands remain where Ray put them.

Lucas came back with a duffle and twelve hours a week. Ray listed the conditions once: contribution when the check clears, dishes the same night, no guests without asking, bathroom door open for brushing teeth. The list on the fridge grew. Hours. Clothes. Knees on the carpet. Lucas followed it. He deleted the full-time opening. He stopped looking at apartments. His mother called from Phoenix and asked if the spare room was quiet; Ray answered while his fingers worked. She came home and asked about rent. Under the table two fingers rested on the inside of Lucas’s wrist. He left them there until the plates were cleared.

The spare-room hangers stay empty. Shirts occupy the bottom drawer of Ray’s dresser. At night Lucas crosses the hall without being called and sets his palms open on the sheet. The contribution remains short. The door does not close.
