The first came with the loss of thirty occupied worlds to the Scandinoids, whose victory had been made possible through the intervention of the mysterious Aevum. The second was even more devastating: the complete destruction of a Malovar invasion fleet in the Helion Verge, a defeat that shattered both ships and reputation.
Yet defeat did not weaken the resolve of the Empire's supreme ruler.
The Malovar Director, Scalar, refused to allow these reversals to derail the Empire's doctrine of defence through domination. To him, the answer was not retreat, but renewal. Across the Malovar home world and the twenty-eight occupied planets of the empire, manufacturing complexes and cloning facilities were ordered to increase production without delay. New warships rolled from orbital shipyards, while endless ranks of cloned soldiers emerged from their incubation chambers, replacing those lost in battle.
At the same time, Scalar commissioned a select group of military strategists to conduct a ruthless analysis of the recent campaigns. Every tactical failure, every miscalculation, and every unforeseen weakness would be examined so that such defeats would never be repeated.
Despite his uncompromising ambitions, Scalar was not blind to reality. He declared the Helion Verge off-limits for future offensives and abandoned any immediate plans to challenge the Scandinoids' newly consolidated thirty-world stronghold beyond it. The price of another failure was simply too great.
Instead, his gaze turned south.
Beyond the Empire's borders lay only a handful of independent worlds—isolated, vulnerable, and ripe for conquest. Expanding the empire beyond these handful of planets would require the Malovar to extend the reach of their military machine. Vast frontier space stations and heavily fortified spaceports would have to be constructed along the Empire's southern frontier, creating the vital supply lines needed to sustain future invasions.
It was a bold and dangerous undertaking.
But for the Malovar, expansion was not merely ambition.
It was survival.
