NS is my favourite author, but sadly this book exasperated me somewhat. His books are long and usually comprised of 2 or 3 parts. With Cryptonomicon it worked. For me this book did not. I lost track of who was reincarnated as what and then lost the will to care. The first part had great ideas but then it drifted into a quest with characters I didn't know or care about. It then turned into a Tolkien thing towards the end. The last 30 pages pulled it together but it felt rushed.

Neal Stephenson is the author of Seveneves, Reamde, Anathem, the three-volume historical epic The Baroque Cycle (Quicksilver, The Confusion, and The System of the World) as well as Cryptonomicon, The Diamond Age, Snow Crash, and Zodiac.
