About this ebook

In a moonlit forest steeped in age and dread, Hilda the Vala grieves the collapse of her hopes for Edith and Harold, and even her faith in prophecy begins to fail. When a sinister witch tempts her to answer sorrow with hatred and to weave a charmed banner that can bend fate, Hilda is shaken into doubting whether the old gods have betrayed her—or whether some harsher truth lies beyond her visions. Across England, that same struggle between destiny and human will gathers force as King Harold and his council confront William's invasion and the terrifying cost of defending the realm. At Westminster and Waltham alike, loyalty is tested by love, duty, and omens. Harold rallies his nobles to meet the Norman threat, then takes a wrenching farewell from Githa, his kin, and Edith, who blesses him in a scene of spiritual tenderness shadowed by a bowed crucifix and the fear of looming ruin. Hilda's banner arrives as a sign of ancestral pride and support, but on the battlefield at Sanguelac, courage collides with deception, slaughter, and the crushing logic of war. As Norman feints, hidden ditches, and Odo's fiery sermon turn the tide, Harold and his companions fight on against fate itself. About the author

Edward Bulwer-Lytton, later Baron Lytton, was a prolific Victorian novelist, playwright, poet, and politician whose life bridged literature, public service, and the shifting ambitions of nineteenth-century Britain. Born into an aristocratic family in 1803, he studied at Cambridge, entered Parliament, and became one of the most widely read writers of his age, admired for his versatility and his remarkable ability to move between historical fiction, social commentary, melodrama, and the supernatural. Over a long career he produced a vast body of work that helped shape popular taste in the Victorian era, combining vivid storytelling with reflective ideas about power, class, ambition, and moral responsibility. His writing often explores the tension between individual desire and social duty, the fragility of civilizations, and the ways history is remembered and rewritten, themes that still feel timely in a world preoccupied with identity, authority, and cultural change. Though some of his prose reflects the ornamented style of his century, his influence remains strong: he helped define the modern historical novel, contributed enduring phrases to the English language, and showed how fiction could entertain while also probing political and ethical questions. Today, readers interested in sweeping historical drama, richly imagined past worlds, and the roots of modern popular fiction will find much to admire in Bulwer-Lytton's work, especially if they enjoy authors who combine spectacle with serious thought.
