If not the worst book I've ever read, probably very close to it. An embarrassing succession of really cringe-worthy improbabilities and coincidences, and sheer physical impossibilities obvious to anybody who's learned science beyond what is portrayed in bugs bunny and roadrunner cartoons. It gets to the point where you continue reading just for the laughs. Particular gem to watch for: the author's idea of what would happen to a non-sealed ( i.e. at equilibrium with outside pressure ) diving bell if its window is broken. I'm really grateful I borrowed this book from a library. I'd still be sleepless years later if I'd spent even one cent of hard-earned money on this puerile trash!

Nice cover. Interesting premise. Hopelessly pedestrian writing. This book represents a victory of ambitious and tenacious marketing over literary merit. The style of writing is devoid of any intellect and interest, even for an action thriller. It felt like reading the work of a 15 year old and would maybe appeal to same. The book also shamelessly solicits itself to potential Hollywood courtiers. Very disappointing coming from an Australian author. Five thumbs down... and I want my money back.

Over-the-top, fast paced, and utterly enjoyable! Like most of Reilly's books it is a fantastical tale on a huge scale, and for me was the perfect introduction to his books over 20 years ago. Ignore any negative reviews of this book, some people must have absolutely no joy in their lives and an inability to enjoy FICTION writing... Pick it up and get lost in The Scarecrow's world for a few hours, you're in for a hell of a ride!
